KISS OF THE RABBIT GOD, Q&A ANDREW HUANG

Director Andrew Huang's new short film KISS OF THE RABBIT GOD is a stand out at the 2019 https://www.tribecafilm.com Tribeca Film Festival.  A must see short-film from an exciting, emerging director.

Here is what Andrew Huang had to share about making KISS OF THE RABBIT GOD with AmNews Curtain Raiser.

AMNEWS CURTAIN RAISER:  Your visual style is motivating.  I didn't want to blink in case I missed something.  What's the inspiration behind this story?

ANDREW  HUANG:  On a trip to Mexico City, I encountered an exhibition on Xōchipilli, the Aztec god of flowers and patron of gay love. The story of Xōchipilli inspired me to redirect my lens toward my own Chinese heritage, through which I found the Qing dynasty story of Tu'er Shen, 兔兒神 , known as the Rabbit God or patron deity of gay love. This inspired me to write a film about a Chinese restaurant worker who falls in love with the god and is led on a journey of self-discovery.

ANCR:  What's next?  What type of stories do you want to tell?

AH: I'm interested in combining immigrant stories with mythology. The immigrant experience in America is the defining struggle of the American Dream, and with every immigrant story comes the wealth of culture, stories, folklore, and mythology that form the background of where those families came from. I'm interested in mixing the modern and ancient into stories that feel magical and authentically human.
