Honoring the Power, Resiliency, and Selflessness of the Women Leading Media Associations: Julie Burton, Heather Cohen, Francine Compton, Michelle Lee, Nora Lopéz, Lisa Matthews, and Dorothy Tucker

In celebration of Women's History Month, the Multicultural Media & Correspondents Association (MMCA) is proud to present the 1st Annual Sheroes in Media Awards to uplift extraordinary women who promote diversity in media and exemplify diverse media excellence. This inaugural event will honor unsung sheroes leading organizations that amplify underrepresented voices in the media and elevate our stories.

At this critical time in our country it is more important than ever to have greater diversity in who, what, where, when and how stories are told.  MMCA is beyond honored to launch this annual event by celebrating the powerful sheroes currently leading the organizations at the spear of the fight for media diversity while also building support for our ongoing effort to increase diverse media ownership,” said David Morgan, MMCA President. 

Co-emceed by Alicia Menendez, Anchor and Correspondent - MSNBC and author of The Likeability Trap and Inaugural MMCDTM Broadcast Journalist of the Year honoree, and by Richard Lui, Anchor - MSNBC and NBC News and author of Enough About Me: The Unexpected Power of Selflessness. The event will celebrate the power, resiliency, and selflessness of the following honorees:

  • Julie Burton, Executive Director, Women’s Media Center
  • Heather Cohen, Board Chair, Alliance for Women in Media
  • Francine Compton, President, Native American Journalist Association
  • Michelle Lee, Chair Asian American Journalists Association
  • Nora Lopez, President, National Association of Hispanic Journalist
  • Lisa Matthews, President, National Press Club
  • Dorothy Tucker, President, National Association of Black Journalists

The event will feature an award ceremony and a performance by comedian Gina Brillon followed by a first-ever moderated roundtable discussion with all of the honorees. VIP guests will gather in a virtual room for a cocktail reception and then view the program.

MMCA is a nonpartisan/nonprofit organization leading a call to action to increase media diversity.  In just its fifth year, MMCA has become a trusted convener and facilitator of thought leadership, resource and information sharing, and strategic engagement between multicultural media stakeholders, tech and media decision-makers, policymakers, and private entities committed to increasing the percentage of diverse media stakeholders and content.
