SOUTH ASIAN REPRESENTATION RISING AT THE 2021 OSCARS®

Could there be potential nominations for Brown Hollywood in the major categories?

Actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas (“The White Tiger”) will announce the 93rd Oscars® nominations in all 23 Academy Award® categories along with husband, singer-songwriter, and actor Nick Jonas (“Kingdom”) in a two-part live presentation on Monday, March 15, 5:19 a.m. PDT / 8:19 a.m. EDT / 12:19 p.m. GMT / 8:19 p.m. CST, via global live stream on Oscar.comOscars.org, the Academy’s digital platforms – TwitterYouTubeFacebook – NY and LA Switch pool ports and satellite downlink feed.

Chopra-Jonas' The White Tiger was tipped as a hot contender to be nominated in the Best Film and Best Actor categories for the 2021 Oscars®, right at the onset of its opening week on Netflix. The film was also produced by fellow South Asians - India-based entrepreneur and producer, Mukul Deora and executive produced by Los Angeles-based executive, Prem Akkaraju (CEO of Oscar® winning VFX company, Weta Digital), and Oscar® nominee Ava DuVernay, to name a few of the prolific names behind the movie.

Preceding the 2021 Oscar nominations on Monday, March 15,
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the campaign art for the 93rd Oscars®.  The 2021 campaign illustrates this year’s tagline, “Bring Your Movie Love,” celebrating our global appreciation for the power of film to foster connection, to educate, and to inspire us to tell our own stories.

The Academy invited seven international artists to create custom Oscar® statuette art inspired by the question, “What do movies mean to you?”, including South Asian
artist and illustrator, Karan Singh, from Sydney, Australia. His distinctive work is a contemporary and playful combination of op-art and mid-century graphic design.  Through restricted yet vibrant color palettes and hypnotic patterns, he explores and exploits our perception of depth and movement. Singh's art lives in an eclectic variety of mediums, including prints, animation, video, augmented reality, puzzles, sculpture, and clothing.  Over his professional career, he has worked with the likes of Apple, Louis Vuitton, Herman Miller, The New York Times, and Nike.

It is exciting to see a growing number of South Asians in prominent positions become visible in the Hollywood landscape, not only from the US but also from South Asia, giving a more solid foundation of inclusion. This trend needs to continue and the POC community needs to rally around and support one another as is the example of The White Tiger.
