"August Wilson's The Piano Lesson" Broadway Revival Becomes Highest Grossing Revival of a Play This Season

The hit Broadway production of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson has become the highest-grossing revival of a play this season. Directed by Tony Award nominee LaTanya Richardson Jackson, the play featured an all-star cast including Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, and Danielle Brooks. The production received widespread critical acclaim and was featured in the Emmy-nominated docuseries "Working in the Theatre," produced by The American Theatre Wing.

The play is set in 1936 Pittsburgh's Hill District and centers around a brother and sister's battle over a family heirloom, a piano carved with their ancestors' faces. The production, which won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, explores themes of family, legacy, and the African American experience.

The "Working in the Theatre" episode features exclusive interviews and discussions with director LaTanya Richardson Jackson and set designer Beowulf Boritt, who collaborated on the production. The episode can be viewed on The American Theatre Wing's YouTube channel.

The Piano Lesson played at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and was produced by Foresight Theatrical.
