Title: Chosen Family: A Conversation about Queer Friendships in Art

Date/Time: Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023, from 5-5:30 PM PST / 8-8:30 PM EST

Location: Online via YouTube

Event Page Link: https://bit.ly/chosenfamily2023

Celebrate the power of “chosen families” in the queer community. These friendships often form some of the strongest bonds for those in the queer community as they come of age, seek to form their sexual and gender identity, navigate being marginalized by society and/or rejected by members of their biological families. These friendships have led to the formation of houses in the ballroom scene, lifelong bonds, and the creation of art and archives documenting queer friendships.

We will speak with some of the artists and archivists who are honoring chosen families. Plus, we’ll share photos submitted by viewers of their chosen family.

Featuring:

  • Kevin Aviance, legendary drag queen/musician/performance artist

  • Beau McCall, creative artist and creator of REWIND: MEMORIES ON REPEAT

  • Souleo, independent curator, as moderator

The event is guest curated by Souleo.

Co-presented by Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, and SAGE.
