"AHEAD OF THE CURVE is the story of one of the most influential women in lesbian history you’ve never heard of and the impact her work continues to have today." – GLAAD
Growing up, Franco never saw any representation of queer women–she didn’t even know it was possible for a woman to be gay. When she realized she was a lesbian, it changed the course of her life.
In 1990, Franco created a safe place for lesbians in the form of Curve magazine. Her approach to threats and erasure in the ‘90s was to highlight all kinds of LGBTQ+ women and make them beautifully visible. The magazine helped build a foundation for the movements being led by today’s queer activists.
Decades later, in the face of accelerating threats to the LGBTQ community, Franco’s legacy faces extinction and she reassesses her life after a disabling injury. She sets out to understand the work being led by queer women and nonbinary people today. Featuring Andrea Pino-Silva, Kim Katrin, Denice Frohman, Amber Hikes, Jewelle Gomez, Melissa Etheridge, and Lea DeLaria, and a score composed by the legendary Meshell Ndegeocello, AHEAD OF THE CURVE celebrates the legacy of a movement while considering the agenda of its future.
About The Curve Foundation
The Curve Foundation (TCF) is a powerful example of the impact of documentary film. Founded as a direct result of AHEAD OF THE CURVE (distributed by Wolfe Video), The Curve Foundation is the only national nonprofit championing lesbian and queer women’s culture and stories. Their programs leverage over 30 years of history and culture in Curve magazine, connecting the community across generations. TCF supports journalists who tell LGBTQ+ women’s stories and produces speakers series to connect the community directly with today’s culture makers through intersectional, intergenerational conversations on gender, queerness, race, ability, and activism.
Curve is championing Lesbian Visibility Week April 22-28, 2024. For more information please visit lesbianvisibilityweekusa.com.
