Jacques Audiard’s "Emilia Pérez" Shines at Cannes, Sets Stage for Historic Oscar Nominations

Jacques Audiard’s musical drama "Emilia Pérez" is making waves after its four lead actresses collectively won the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The film has garnered significant attention, with campaign submissions still pending, it could secure two of the five slots for its actors—a feat achieved about a third of the time in this category.

Zoe Saldaña, known for starring in four movies grossing over $2 billion each, has consistently showcased her industry prowess. However, she has yet to fully display her acting depth.

Her role in Netflix’s tentpole awards contender might be her opportunity to follow in the footsteps of past winners like Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”) and Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”).

Her co-star Selena Gomez, fresh from earning her first acting Emmy nomination for “Only Murders in the Building,” might be nominated alongside Saldaña. This would be a historic moment, marking the first time two Latinas are nominated in the same category—a recognition long overdue.

Selena Gomez has also become the most Emmy-nominated Latina producer, receiving a nod under the “Best Comedy Series” category for her contributions as an executive producer on Hulu‘s "Only Murders in the Building." Additionally, Gomez received her first acting Emmy nomination this morning for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Mabel.

Gomez was previously nominated twice for a group Emmy Award (2022-2023) in the Outstanding Comedy Series category for Hulu’s "Only Murders in the Building" as an executive producer. Alongside Gomez, Martin Short, Dan Fogelman, and Jess Rosenthal also serve as executive producers.
