Film at Lincoln Center Announces Revivals Lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival
Film at Lincoln Center has unveiled the Revivals section for the 62nd New York Film Festival (NYFF), running from September 27 to October 14, 2024. This year's lineup features a stunning collection of world premieres and restorations, celebrating the artistry and cultural significance of groundbreaking films from around the globe.
Among the highlights are world premieres of restorations such as Ardak Amirkulov’s The Fall of Otrar, Zeinabu irene Davis’s Compensation, Raymond Depardon’s Reporters, John Hanson and Rob Nilsson’s Northern Lights, and Robina Rose’s Nightshift. These films, along with additional restorations from iconic directors like Chantal Akerman, Clive Barker, Robert Bresson, and Ousmane Sembène, have been meticulously restored to preserve their impact for new generations of cinephiles.
The Revivals section is a tribute to significant works that have been digitally remastered and restored, ensuring that their artistic innovation and cultural resonance remain powerful today. The selection includes a mix of classics, rare finds, and films that continue to hold relevance due to their bold storytelling and thematic depth.
This year, several Revivals titles explore themes of political unrest and conflict. Ousmane Sembène and Thierno Faty Sow’s Camp de Thiaroye recounts the tragic Thiaroye Massacre in post-war Senegal, while The Fall of Otrar by Ardak Amirkulov presents a historical epic set against the backdrop of Genghis Khan’s conquest. John Hanson and Rob Nilsson’s Northern Lights delves into the formation of the populist Nonpartisan League in North Dakota, reflecting the socio-political challenges of the 1910s.
The struggles and resistance of women under oppressive regimes are poignantly depicted in Lino Brocka’s Bona and Marva Nabili’s The Sealed Soil. Bona, a powerful narrative set during Ferdinand Marcos’s dictatorship in the Philippines, tells the story of a woman who falls for a philandering actor, leading to a harsh critique of gender dynamics under authoritarian rule. The Sealed Soil offers a rare glimpse into the life of a woman in rural Iran, emphasizing the quiet yet profound resistance against patriarchal norms.
Photography takes center stage in Frederick Wiseman’s Model, which offers an intimate look at the world of fashion photography, and in Raymond Depardon’s Reporters, which examines the complex dynamics between photographers and their subjects within the press agency he founded.
Other standout films include the devastating La Musica by Marguerite Duras and Paul Seban, Chantal Akerman’s short film J’ai faim, j’ai froid, and Robert Bresson’s Four Nights of a Dreamer, a film that captures the emotional aftermath of the May '68 student protests in France.
In a special treat for festival audiences, the Revivals section will also feature the North American premiere of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, a horror classic that has been restored in stunning 4K. Barker’s debut film, based on his novel The Hellbound Heart, takes viewers on a terrifying journey into a nightmarish world inhabited by the gruesome Cenobites.
The Revivals section, curated by Florence Almozini and Dan Sullivan in collaboration with Dennis Lim and Gina Telaroli, reflects the enduring tradition of the New York Film Festival in bringing bold and remarkable cinematic works to audiences. NYFF62 continues this legacy, showcasing films that have shaped the cultural landscape and continue to influence filmmakers and audiences alike.
Festival screenings will take place across four partner venues in New York City: Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (Staten Island), BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), The Bronx Museum, and the Museum of the Moving Image (Queens). Each venue will host a selection of films, with a complete list of showtimes to be announced later this month.
As always, the New York Film Festival promises to be a celebration of cinema’s past, present, and future, offering a diverse array of films that challenge, inspire, and captivate.
