The Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire, which captivated audiences worldwide, is being reimagined for the stage. Tony Award-winning producer Ken Davenport has secured the rights to adapt this beloved story into Slumdog Millionaire: The Musical, featuring the iconic score by none other than A.R. Rahman, whose powerful compositions earned him two Oscars for the original film.
The musical promises a dynamic blend of Rahman’s celebrated songs, including the unforgettable “Jai Ho,” and brand-new music that reintroduces audiences to the intense, magical journey of two brothers from the streets of Mumbai. Rahman shared his enthusiasm: “This reimagined version will take you on an electrifying journey with new songs and a few unexpected twists. We can’t wait for you to experience it with us!”
For Davenport, this project is personal. Reflecting on his connection to Slumdog Millionaire, he recalls taking his father, who rarely spoke about his life in India, to see the film. It unlocked memories and emotions, inspiring Davenport to bring Indian culture to the stage in a way that honors his heritage and resonates with audiences worldwide.
Since its 2008 release, Slumdog Millionaire has been hailed as a cinematic triumph, grossing over $378 million globally. Adapted from Vikas Swarup’s novel Q&A, the film, directed by Danny Boyle, won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains a beloved modern-day fairytale.
Rahman, a legend in his own right, has long been celebrated for his contributions to Indian and global music. With a storied career spanning over 160 films, Rahman’s collaboration on Slumdog Millionaire: The Musical promises a soundscape as vibrant and unforgettable as the original.
Produced by Davenport in association with Celador International, Slumdog Millionaire: The Musical will be an experience blending visual artistry and deeply resonant storytelling.
