Real Women Have Curves: The Musical is an empowering, funny, and heartwarming story set in the summer of 1987. The plot follows Ana Garcia, a young woman from East Los Angeles, who dreams of escaping her current life. When her family faces a critical order for 200 dresses, Ana must balance her personal ambitions with the expectations of her family and the strong community of women who surround her. Based on Josefina López's play, which inspired the iconic film Real Women Have Curves, the musical has been hailed as "a winner, with a big heart and joyous abandon" by The Boston Globe and "makes us feel we can all soar!" according to WBUR.
This exciting new Broadway production is produced by Waitress producers Barry and Fran Weissler, alongside Jack Noseworthy. Real Women Have Curves: The Musical had a successful world premiere at the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T) at Harvard University in 2023, and will feature music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning artist Joy Huerta of the Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy, along with composer Benjamin Velez. The book is written by Lisa Loomer and Nell Benjamin, with music supervision by Nadia DiGiallonardo and direction & choreography by Tony and Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo.
Joy Huerta will make history as only the second female composer of Mexican descent to have a show on Broadway, marking a milestone for both Latinx representation and women in the industry.
The full cast and additional creative team will be announced soon, and fans are encouraged to stay updated through the official website and social media channels.
