The film traces Sonia’s trailblazing journey from a turbulent childhood in the South Bronx, where television became her refuge, to Manhattan’s prestigious High School of Performing Arts, where she discovered a love of performing – even as she struggled to navigate two very different worlds.
Sonia’s determination and talent earned her a drama scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University, which led to her breakout role in the original off-Broadway production of Godspell. From there, at age 21, she found her way to SESAME STREET – a place she would call home for 44 years, winning 15 Emmys for writing, and forever changing the face of children’s media and representation. As “Maria,” Sonia became
the person she once needed to see on television.
And that’s only half the story.
Sonia went on to become a celebrated author and now serves as the creator and executive producer of the critically acclaimed PBS animated series ALMA’S WAY.
With humor, heart, and Nuyorican grit, Sonia shares the lessons she’s learned along the way. From the Bronx and beyond, giving viewers the chance to learn once again from this beloved icon.
The film also features interviews with luminaries such as Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and legendary Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell). It blends intimate conversations, archival footage, re-enactments, and animation that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Like watching your favorite children’s show through grown-up eyes.
