Here are some of the films that are starting to gain momentum toward being nominated and winning an Oscar® in 2019.
Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman" which premiered at Cannes and is currently playing in theaters.
Stepping behind the camera, as a director is Bradley Cooper's "A Star is Born" he also stars alongside Lady Gaga.
Director Damien Chazelle ("La La Land") is back with a "First Man," a biopic about astronaut Neil Armstrong and reunites with Ryan Gosling (who plays Armstrong).
Alfonso Cuarón's breathtaking film "Gravity" earned him a Best Director Oscar, in 2013. His new film is "Roma" a period piece set in the 1970s that follows a middle-class family in Mexico City over the course of a year.
Steve McQueen, director of the Best Picture-winning "12 Years a Slave," returns with a crime drama and based on the TV series of the same name, "Widows" follows a group of grieving widows who decide to take matters into their own hands when their husbands are killed during a job. The ensemble is spearheaded by Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis.
Always rooting for the underdog in the race, Fox Searchlight has high hopes for "The Favourite" directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, which follows the rivalry between Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) as they compete for the affections of the Queen of England (Olivia Coleman).
"If Beale Street Could Talk" by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins ("Moonlight") brings the powerful drama based on James Baldwin's novel (1974) of the same name, which tells the story of a pregnant Harlem woman trying to prove her fiancé's innocence of a crime.
Felix Van Groeningen's "Beautiful Boy" stars Timothée Chalamet. This film is based on the true story of father David (Steve Carell) and his son Nic Sheff (Chalamet), specifically detailing Nic's addiction to meth and the struggles that came from that.
The power of "Black Panther" directed by Ryan Coogler an acknowledged global phenomenon ($1.3 billion gross). It's been reported by that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is committing big bucks toward an awards campaign, and many believe Coogler deserves it.
