The 2
nd Ojai Short Film Festival (OSFF)  has announced its line-up for the 2019 Edition from Dec 13th - 15th 2019 with the award-winning short, Laboratory Conditions, a sci-fi supernatural thriller that questions our existence and the power that lies within us. Starring Oscar© winner Marisa Tomei and Oscar© nominee Minnie Driver, written by Oscar© nominee and BAFTA© winner Terry Rossio (creator/writer-Aladdin, Shrek, Pirates of The Caribbean) and produced by Joe Russell (Netflix’s XOXO); Boy Boy Girl Girl, a dark comedy about a gay couple trying to adopt a newborn from a drug addict and her abusive girlfriend. Starring Katie Holmes and directed by Oscar© winner Ross Kauffman (Born Into Brothels); The AFI conservatory student short Tree #3 directed by Omer Ben Shachar which highlights racial identity inequality. It won the 2019 Student Academy Award©; a Spotlight Initiative starting this year with South Asian films that feature prominent Bollywood stars Nawazuddin Sidiqui and Divya Dutta; award-winning films featured at Tribeca Film Festival (Black Hat) and TIFF (The Field) to name a few, and some thought-provoking and outstanding films from Portugal, Netherlands, Sierra Leone, UK, Australia and Italy.  This year OSFF is introducing a select number of Pilot Episodes for series as one of its long-term visions is to be a conduit between content creators and network executives, fostering independent artists into the mainstream.

OSFF—co-founded by filmmakers and producers Sunil Sadarangani and Ojai local Aman Segal - of Indian origin — had a successful, at capacity, inaugural year in 2018 at Greater Goods in Meiners Oaks. The founders showcased carefully curated, award-winning short films that ranged in genres and included some of the industry’s most accomplished artists, like icon Johnny Depp, David Lynch, Nick Offerman, J.K. Simmons, Laura Dern, Sally Kirkland, and Penelope Ann Miller. It has set a benchmark in identifying caliber content as two films programmed in 2018 made it to 2019

Oscars©: Period. End of Sentence (Oscar© Winner Best Documentary Short) and Weekends (Oscar© Nominee Best Animated Short)

Hollywood showed its support with attendance by Peter Farrelly (Green Book), Chad L. Coleman (Walking Dead) and Bettina Fisher (Executive at the AMPAS) to name a few, along with filmmakers and film enthusiasts from Ojai and Los Angeles.

I am very happy to see the Hollywood creative community and the city of Ojai has enthusiastically embraced our short film festival.  It's our goal to continue bringing the best short content from around the world, to Ojai,” asserts director of programming and co-founder Sunil Sadarangani.

Further elaborating, co-founder and managing director Aman Segal says, “Short films are a way for filmmakers to get in front of as many eyeballs as they can. Behind the scenes, at Ojai Short Film Fest we are looking for the next strategies, platforms or technologies that will make it possible for filmmakers to monetize their work now and into the future.”

Producer of Laboratory Conditions, Joe Russell, excited to screen the film at the festival had this to say: “I am so happy to be able to share Laboratory Conditions with the audience at OSFF! It was a dream come true to have Marisa Tomei and Minnie Driver respond so excitedly to Terry's script.  I am so proud of what we were all able to accomplish and I recommend that all filmmakers reach out to their dream cast when making their short or feature-length projects.”

Industry veteran and Academy Award© winner Ross Kauffman who has three films in competition this year is elated, “This is very exciting as I don’t think I’ve ever had three films in a single festival before. These shorts that Ojai has kindly chosen to screen are wildly different but have one theme in common that comes up again and again in my work: Family and the vast array of emotions it brings up in all of us.”

Oscar© winning producer Kim Magnusson, a returning alum with Konfirmanden, his sensitive drama on gender identity says, “I am so excited and very much looking forward to being back at the Ojai Short Film Fest. It was such a fantastic moment last year when Little Match Girl won the Audience Award. We had a great time!”

The festival opening day event on December 13th, 2019 will be held at the Ojai Retreat & Inn 160 Besant Road, Ojai, CA 93023 and regular screenings and closing night will take place at the Sane Living Center, 316 E. Matilija Street, Ojai CA 93023 on December 14th & 15th, 2019.
