Casting News & Character Descriptions:

Tawny Newsome (Space Force) as Billie: As a talented comedy writer who works for Kid, Billie is constantly trying to earn respect and recognition for her work, leaving her stuck between loyalty to Kid or pursuing her long-term dreams through other outlets.

 

Will Catlett (Charm City Kings, Black Lightning) as Herschel: A man of few words, this jack-of-all-trades bodyguard is a constant presence in Kid's life. Herschel has a quiet sense of humor and takes the chaos surrounding Kid in stride, but struggles to keep Kid-safe once he and his brother Carlton grow closer.

 

Paul Adelstein (Imposters, Chance, Mrs. Maisel) as Todd: As Kid’s longtime manager, Todd’s years navigating the industry with Kid has made them close like brothers. Todd struggles to find the balance between friend and manager as Kid faces ongoing challenges with his brother, Carlton. 


Ash Santos (American Horror Story: Apocalypse, Night Teeth) as Daphne: An outgoing young woman who joins Carlton and Kid at a VIP afterparty that continues to an eventful night. 

 

John Ales (Euphoria, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll) as Nikos: Bringing a whole new definition to a close-knit family, Nikos will stop at nothing to make sure his brothers Savvas and Ari are safe. 


Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley, Red Notice)  as Savvas: Part of the same close-knit family that knows no limit, Savvas values the safety and success of his brothers Nikos and Ari over anything.

 

Lauren London (The Game, Single Ladies) as Monyca: 

Faced with new challenges of co-parenting a child with Kid, Monyca still enjoys a close bond with her ex. 


Billy Zane (Titanic, Guilt, Waltzing with Brando) as Ari: Coldly unfazed by the nature of his job, Ari helps make problems go away. 


Previously Announced Casting:

Kevin Hart as Kid: After struggling for years to make his mark in the industry, uber-successful comedian and movie star Kid returns to his hometown of Philly to kick-off a huge stand-up tour. When a celebratory night takes an unexpected turn, Kid is forced to find out just how far he’ll go to protect his family and hard-earned success. 


Wesley Snipes as Carlton: The ties of family are strong, but the brotherly relationship between Carlton and Kid is complicated and contentious. When Kid reunites with Carlton in Philly, they become embroiled in a problematic situation that puts their relationship to the test.


About True Story:

  • Logline: A tour stop in Kid’s  (Hart) hometown of Philadelphia becomes a matter of life and death for one of the world's most famous comedians when the consequences of a lost evening with his wayward older brother (Snipes) threaten to destroy everything he’s built.

  • This marks Hart’s dramatic series debut who also serves as an executive producer.

  • True Story is executive produced by Narcos and Narcos: Mexico showrunner Eric Newman, under his overall Television deal with Netflix.

  • Charles Murray (Luke Cage, Sons of Anarchy) serves as executive producer and showrunner.

  • Caroline Currier from Grand Electric and Mike Stein and Tiffany Brown from Hartbeat Productions all serve as co-producers.

  • Stephen Williams (Watchmen, Lost) will direct and executive produce the first four episodes. 

  • Hanelle Culpepper (Star Trek Picard, Kung Fu) will direct the final four episodes. 


About Eric Newman

Newman is currently under an overall deal with Netflix on both the feature and the television sides.  Newman is responsible for the hugely successful Narcos franchise, which he originated and brought to Netflix in 2014. He recently segued from Narcos’ showrunner to oversee his expanding Netflix slate.  On the TV side, he continues to EP Narcos: Mexico, which was recently renewed for its 3rd season, and is working on the anticipated opioid TV drama Painkiller, directed by Pete Berg with Alex Gibney as producer.  On the feature side, Newman is in production on his third Netflix film, Escape From Spiderhead starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller directed by Joseph Kosinski, and in pre-production on The Upper World starring Daniel Kaluuya. Newman is also producing the recently announced action-adventure saga Water Margin, directed by Shinsuke Sato.
