On August 17th: PIGSKINS TO PAINTBRUSHES by acclaimed author-illustrator Don Tate drops.
Pigskins to Paintbrushes tells the rousing story of Ernie Barnes, a Black pro football player and fine artist, that will fascinate sports fans and art lovers alike. The back matter includes Barnes’ photograph and his official Topps trading card. Also included are an author’s note, endnotes, a bibliography, and a list of websites where Barnes’ work can be seen.
Tate was inspired to tell Barnes’ story in part because of the parallels between their lives. Both Tate and Barnes found pushback from their peers to pursue art vs. sports, and both Tate and Barnes eventually found success in sports and the arts.
The book expands on society’s expectations of what a boy looks and acts like and the pressure that can put on Black boys who are expected to be good at sports.
