"The Last Days of Capitalism" - a conversation about money, prostitution, and excess.

"The Last Days of Capitalism" - a conversation about money, prostitution, and excess.

“The Last Days of Capitalism” is about overdoing it, despite being warned about the consequences. Here we meet a very wealthy man, an artist by his description, who’s decided to spend time with himself, holed up high above Las Vegas in a penthouse hotel room, for nearly a month, clearly suffering from some unnamed trauma.

His night with a mysterious young woman turns into several nights, as he discovers that she is more than a match for him intellectually. She, too, is intrigued and while she initially stays because he is paying her, the two begin a complex relationship that could turn into something more than just lustful desire. But both have secrets, and getting to the bottom of those—without the inevitability of money getting in the way—will be a challenge.

A man and woman begin a complex affair over 72 hours in a Las Vegas penthouse. And that man is wealthy (Mike Faiola ) and he’s been holed up high above Las Vegas in a penthouse hotel room for nearly a month, clearly suffering from some unnamed trauma. But he’s lonely and hires a prostitute (Sarah Harper) to keep him company, first for a night which stretches into several nights, as he discovers that she is more than a match for him intellectually.

Who is this mysterious rich man, this is the question that looms throughout the film, and this intrigues the unnamed lady for hire. There is a sense of hope in the air that something substantial could be built between these two. It’s clear they are both playing a game but why is what keeps the film bouncing along.

It’s also evident that they both have secrets, and getting those truths exposed —without more money being paid—becomes part of their game.

“The Last Days of Capitalism” was an official selection at Cinequest and won Best Feature at the Kansas City Film Festival, Breakthrough achievement in Directing, at the Twin Cities Film Festival. This film marks the feature directorial debut of writer/director Adam Mervis, the screenwriter of “21 Bridges” (Chadwick Boseman).

Mervis is a talent and his works is intimate and intelligent and it looks beautiful,  thanks to the work of cinematographer Bethany Michalski, editor David Au, and composer Alexander Burke.

The San Jose Mercury News calls "Last Days of Capitalism" "sleek, sexy and surprising” and I would agree.
