From humble beginnings in Detroit, Elijah Rhea Johnson has achieved a dream that many performers only dare to aspire to. On a recent evening in New York, the sold-out audience at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre erupted into ecstatic applause as Elijah made his debut as Michael Jackson in the multi-Tony Award-winning musical, MJ.
For Elijah, this moment was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to his craft. He had already helped to develop the role of "Middle Michael" throughout the workshop process, and now he was stepping into the spotlight to take on one of the most iconic figures in music history.
Directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon, and with a book written by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, MJ has already garnered critical acclaim and four Tony Awards, including Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost and Best Choreography for Wheeldon.
But for Elijah, this was more than just a job. It was a full-circle moment, bringing him back to his roots in musical theater. At just 9 years old, he starred as Young Simba in Disney's "The Lion King," Las Vegas/National Touring productions. He went on to become a lead performer in the popular children's group "Kidz Bop," and even joined the R&B boy band "Mindless Behavior" as lead singer.
Now, as he takes on the role of Michael Jackson, Elijah is honored to be making his Broadway debut as the King of Pop. His performance has already electrified audiences and left them wanting more.
