“KPOP” THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST RECORDING
The world of KPOP arrived on Broadway, and the critics were raving about the latest musical sensation. The KPOP Original Broadway Cast Recording will be available digitally on May 8, followed by a CD release on May 12. The album features music, lyrics, music production, and arrangements by Helen Park and music and lyrics by Max Vernon.
The soundtrack has received critical acclaim, with Variety calling it "a set of songs that sound as if they were yanked from Variety’s Hitmakers section." The Wrap describes the music as "a handful of pulsing K-pop gems that feel like they’d fit right into a Seoul top 40 playlist," while Vulture raves about "melodies that sneak into your ears and stay there."
The third track from the album, "Amerika (Checkmate)," was released today, featuring vocals by KPOP boy group F8. The music video for the track is also available to watch. Helen Park, Music and Album Producer, Composer, and Lyricist, notes that the song "describes the tension between people that couldn't be more opposite from each other -- who are also oppressed under the same power, America."
KPOP is the first-ever Broadway musical to celebrate Korean culture with Korean, Korean-American, and API representation on and off-stage. The musical tells the story of global superstars who put everything on the line for a special one-night-only concert, facing cultural and personal struggles that threaten to dismantle one of the industry’s hottest labels.
The musical premiered on November 27, 2022, at the Circle in the Square Theatre, starring K-pop superstar Luna as MwE. Directed by Teddy Bergman and choreographed by Jennifer Weber, KPOP features a book by Jason Kim and was conceived by Woodshed Collective and Jason Kim. The musical also stars Julia Abueva, BoHyung, Major Curda, Jinwoo Jung, Jiho Kang, Amy Keum, James Kho, Marina Kondo, Eddy Lee, Joshua Lee, Jully Lee, Lina Rose Lee, Timothy H. Lee, Abraham Lim, Kate Mina Lin, Aubie Merrylees, Min, Patrick Park, Kevin Woo, Zachary Noah Piser, and John Yi.
