Always looking forward and keeping their fingers firmly on the pulse the NAACP invited SPILL, the de facto place to discuss and discover culture, and announced that the new social media app will power the “55th NAACP Image Awards” Red Carpet live stream as NAACP’s official partner.

SPILL, which is named after the expression “spill the tea,” remixes online conversation with a meme-forward, bold visual spin. Recognizing the impact that Black, Queer, and other culture-driving communities have on culture at large, the app prioritizes a more fun, safe and rewarding experience for Creators on the platform.

“Some of the most iconic moments at an awards show happen before the show on the red carpet, where Black fashion is in the spotlight and the real tea is served,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. “We’re thrilled to partner with SPILL, a Black-owned social media app that is the destination for culture, to offer a new way to experience the red carpet live on this year’s show, all from the comfort of their phones.”

The intimate experience will be broadcast through SPILL’s new Tea Party feature, a vibrant space that remixes the chat room with live audio and/or video to unpack the latest TV shows, book releases, movies, and current trends in culture.

“The NAACP Image Awards red carpet is a moment to get up close and personal with extraordinary talent and trend setters, providing a first glimpse of award show looks and pre-show excitement,” said Kenya Parham, Global VP of Community & Partnerships at SPILL. “SPILL’s go-live feature Tea Parties will bring people a front row seat with unmatched commentary about a moment in culture that can’t be missed, and we are thrilled to be able to offer streamlined access and content in a Tea Party.”

SPILL is a visual conversation app that is the de facto place to discuss and discover culture, founded by former Twitter employees. Named after the expression “spill the tea,” it remixes online conversation with a meme-forward, bold visual spin. Recognizing the impact that Black, Queer and other culture-driving communities have on culture at large, the app prioritizes a more fun, safe and rewarding experience for Creators on the platform.

“Spillionaires” can express themselves by easily adding 90 characters of text to image, GIF, or video. People can share, quote or comment on each post, or “Spill” they see in their brew, and the Spillboard makes it easy to discover the hottest Spills and latest trends from all over the world. SPILL is available for download in beta (testing phase) on iOS and Android devices.

Hosted by award-winning musician, actor, and producer Queen Latifah, the “55th NAACP Image Awards” is one of the most iconic annual celebrations of Black excellence and draws the biggest and brightest stars in Hollywood. Nominees including composer EmmoLei Sankofa and harpist Brandee Younger are already on the app sharing their excitement for the show with the community of SPILL users, also known as the “Spilliverse.”

Founded by former Twitter employees Alphonzo Terrell and DeVaris Brown, SPILL launched to the top most downloaded social networking site in the Apple App Store on July 4 and last reported over 400K downloads as of January 2024.

The NAACP advocates, agitates, and litigates for civil rights due to Black America. Our legacy is built on the foundation of grassroots activism by the biggest civil rights pioneers of the 20th century and is sustained by 21st-century activists. From classrooms and courtrooms to city halls and Congress, our network of members across the country works to secure the social and political power that will end race–based discrimination. That work is rooted in racial equity, civic engagement, and supportive policies and institutions for all marginalized people. We are committed to a world without racism where Black people enjoy equitable opportunities in thriving communities.
