Many things make living in (or visiting) New York special, but for me, the best part is attending Broadway shows. Musicals are my absolute favorite, and I am thrilled to celebrate with Disney their 30 years of Disney on Broadway, a global theatrical phenomenon.
Disney Theatrical Group's origin story begins with a tale as old as time. Disney's Beauty and the Beast opened at the Palace Theatre in New York in 1994, setting the stage for future iconic productions such as The Lion King, Aladdin, and Frozen.
Recently, at a New York press event, I had the opportunity to speak with many of the dedicated and gifted thespians from The Lion King and Aladdin.
In a YouTube video, I learned from L. Steven Taylor (Mufasa in The Lion King on Broadway) why he was excited to rejoin the Broadway company. Michael James Scott, who plays the Genie in Aladdin on Broadway, shared his thoughts on what freedom means to him as an African American man and what it means to him as an African American genie. Lean in—it's deep.
