The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) is set to return to midtown Manhattan for its highly anticipated third edition of AAFCA Goes to Broadway. This annual luncheon, celebrating the intersection of stage, television, and film, will take place on October 14, 2024, at Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse, nestled in the heart of New York City's Theater District.
This year’s event highlights African American talent making waves across Broadway, television, and film, and underscores the invaluable role Broadway plays as a breeding ground for Hollywood. Honorees include actors, playwrights, choreographers, and designers who have made significant contributions to the entertainment industry.
Gil Robertson IV, President and Co-Founder of AAFCA, praised Broadway's lasting impact on the entertainment world: “Broadway has helped shape some of the most profound voices in entertainment today. The stage provides a perfect breeding ground, helping performers and creatives alike excel in their craft—whether in front of the audience or behind the scenes. AAFCA is proud to shine a light on the rich heritage Broadway offers to the entire entertainment industry.”
This year’s distinguished honorees include veteran actor John Earl Jelks, who will be receiving the Distinguished Actor Award. Jelks, currently generating Oscar buzz for his co-starring role in the upcoming film Exhibiting Forgiveness, is recognized for his decades-long dedication to the stage.
Tony Award-winning actor James Monroe Iglehart will receive the Beacon Award for his magnetic performances in both theater and television. Camille A. Brown, a celebrated choreographer, and Nikiya Mathis, a trailblazing hair designer, will be honored with the Salute to Excellence Award for their role in advancing the presence of African American women on Broadway. Additionally, Tony Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins will receive the Vanguard Award for his provocative and boundary-pushing work in modern theater.
Backed by major sponsors including Morgan Stanley, Comcast, and Finn Partners, AAFCA Goes to Broadway continues to celebrate the African American artists who bring their creative prowess to the stage, further bridging the gap between Broadway and Hollywood.
The African American Film Critics Association, the world’s largest group of African American film critics, remains committed to promoting and advocating for African American storytelling across cinema, television, and theater while providing a platform for emerging talent and underrepresented voices in the entertainment industry.
