Cast Announced for JOY: A New True Musical, Celebrating Entrepreneur Joy Mangano
Charl Brown, Adam Grupper, and Mauricio Martínez Join Betsy Wolfe in the Summer Production
The producers of JOY: A New True Musical have announced the principal male cast members joining Tony Award nominee Betsy Wolfe in the upcoming production at the Laura Pels Theatre. Charl Brown, Adam Grupper, and Mauricio Martínez will portray Dan, Rudy, and Tony, respectively.
The musical, which chronicles the life of business pioneer and inventor Joy Mangano, is set to begin previews on June 21, with an official opening on July 20. The limited engagement will run for eight weeks, closing on August 17 at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre.
Wolfe will take on the lead role of Joy Mangano, with previously announced cast members Jill Abramovitz and Honor Blue Savage playing Joy’s mother, Toots, and daughter, Christie.
Directed by Lorin Latarro, the production features a book by Tony Award winner Ken Davenport, with music and lyrics by Grammy and Tony Award nominee AnnMarie Milazzo. Choreography is by Emmy Award winner Joshua Bergasse, and music supervision and arrangements are by Andy Einhorn.
Tickets are currently available at joythemusical.com or by phone at (212) 719-1300.
A Story of Resilience
Inspired by Mangano’s real-life journey from single motherhood to building a business empire, JOY follows the self-made entrepreneur who revolutionized home shopping with her innovative inventions. Her story, previously adapted into the 2015 film Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, is reimagined for the stage as a celebration of perseverance and ambition.
The production’s creative team includes scenic design by Tony Award nominee Anna Louizos, costume design by Tina McCartney, projection and video design by David Bengali, and hair and wig design by Darion Matthews. Jillian Zack serves as music director, with Gary Mickelson as production stage manager. ShowTown Theatricals is handling general management.
Producers Sandi Moran and Ken Davenport lead the production, alongside a roster of co-producers including TBD Theatricals, Christine Petti, Jonathan & Rae Corr, and several others.
Concept Album and Music Video
Ahead of the production, Milazzo released a concept album, The Shape of Things: Songs from Joy The Musical, through Joy Machine Records. The album, produced by Sonny Paladino with music supervision by Andy Einhorn, is available on major streaming platforms. A music video for the title track, performed by Milazzo, has also been released.
Though staged at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, JOY is not a Roundabout Theatre Company production.
