‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Breaks Broadway Record, Surpasses $4 Million in One Week

The critically acclaimed Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck has made history. Written by George Clooney and Grant Heslov and directed by Tony Award winner David Cromer, the production has shattered all previous box office records, becoming the first play in Broadway history to surpass $4 million in weekly grosses.

For the week ending May 4, Good Night, and Good Luck earned an unprecedented $4,003,481.50 across eight performances at the Winter Garden Theatre. The milestone surpasses the previous record held by The Music Man, which reached its peak with nine performances. It is now the highest-grossing production in the Shubert Organization’s storied history.

The play, which revisits the golden age of American journalism and Edward R. Murrow’s famous confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy, has received widespread critical acclaim and was recently nominated for four Tony Awards. Among the nods is a nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for Mr. Clooney, who stars as Murrow.

In addition to its commercial success, the production has launched a partnership with TodayTix to subsidize 2,000 tickets for New York City public school students, with a focus on those studying journalism.

“George Clooney makes Edward R. Murrow a saint of sane journalism for a world that still needs one,” wrote Jesse Green of The New York Times, naming it a Critic’s Pick. Variety praised Clooney’s performance as “riveting,” and The Washington Post described the show as “a chic, alluring, pulse-pounding thriller.”

Based on the 2005 film by the same name, Good Night, and Good Luck dramatizes the real-life stand taken by Murrow and his CBS news team as they challenged the wave of paranoia unleashed by McCarthyism. The cast includes an ensemble of notable performers portraying key historical figures: Glenn Fleshler as Fred Friendly, Ilana Glazer as Shirley Wershba, Clark Gregg as Don Hollenbeck, and Paul Gross as William S. Paley, among others. Mr. Clooney reprises his role from the original screenplay, anchoring a narrative that has become increasingly resonant in today's media landscape.

The creative team behind the production includes scenic design by Scott Pask, lighting by Heather Gilbert, video design by David Bengali, and sound by Daniel Kluger. The cast also features Mac Brandt, Will Dagger, Christopher Denham, Georgia Heers, Carter Hudson, Fran Kranz, and Jennifer Morris, with a robust ensemble rounding out the company.

Good Night, and Good Luck is produced by Seaview, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Jean Doumanian, and Robert Fox.

The Broadway production received five Tony Award nominations: Best Actor in a Play (George Clooney), Best Scenic Design of a Play (Scott Pask), Best Sound Design of a Play (Daniel Kluger), Best Lighting Design of a Play (Heather Gilbert and David Ben
