Montego Gloverr to Step into Lead Role in Critically Acclaimed Revival of Gypsy During Audra McDonald’s Vacation
In a highly anticipated casting announcement, Tony Award nominee Montego Glover (Memphis, Into the Woods) will assume the role of Rose in the five-time Tony Award-nominated revival of Gypsy during the one-week vacation of six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald. Glover will headline eight performances from Monday, June 30, through Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the Majestic Theatre (245 West 44th Street). Tickets are available now via Telecharge.com or at the theater box office.
Directed by six-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe, the revival of Gypsy has garnered nominations in five categories at this year’s Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. Wolfe’s dynamic vision for the classic musical—first suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee—has been met with widespread acclaim, with McDonald’s performance anchoring the production’s critical and commercial success.
Glover brings a celebrated résumé to the role of Rose. A Tony Award nominee and two-time Drama Desk Award winner, her Broadway credits span roles such as Fantine in Les Misérables, Celie and Nettie in The Color Purple, and the Witch in the 2022/23 revival of Into the Woods. Her Off-Broadway performances include The Royale at Lincoln Center Theater and All The Natalie Portmans at MCC Theater. On screen, she has appeared in The Blacklist, Inventing Anna, Bull, and Evil, among many others. Her voice work includes Netflix’s Entergalactic and narration for Audible’s Rebel Girls series. She will soon join the cast of the animated PBS series Alma’s Way. Additionally, the “Montego Glover Exhibition” is now in its third year at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center in her hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The current revival stars Tony Award winner Danny Burstein as Herbie, Joy Woods as Louise, and Jordan Tyson as June. The principal cast also includes Kevin Csolak, Olivier Award winner Lesli Margherita, Lili Thomas, Mylinda Hull, Andrew Kober, James McMenamin, Jacob Ming-Trent, Thomas Silcott, Natalie Wachen, and Tryphena Wade. The production features a robust ensemble of Broadway veterans and newcomers.
Gypsy features a book by Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents, music by Tony and Academy Award winner Jule Styne, and lyrics by Tony, Grammy, Academy Award, and Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Sondheim. The show’s choreography is by four-time Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown, with music direction and supervision by Andy Einhorn and additional orchestrations and arrangements by both Einhorn and Tony Award winner Daryl Waters.
The design team includes scenic design by four-time Tony Award winner Santo Loquasto, costume design by four-time Tony nominee Toni-Leslie James, lighting by nine-time Tony winner Jules Fisher and three-time Tony winner Peggy Eisenhauer, sound design by Tony winner Scott Lehrer, hair and wig design by Academy Award winner Mia Neal, and makeup by Michael Clifton.
