‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical to Host 50 LGBTQ+ Latino Youth from the Ali Forney Center for Pride Month
As Pride Month approaches, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is shifting the spotlight from the stage to the streets of New York, partnering with the Ali Forney Center to provide 50 LGBTQ+ Latino youth with a first-ever Broadway experience.
On June 10, the Tony Award-winning production will welcome participants from the Center’s Spanish-language “Vale Todo” program for a special night at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. For many of the invited youth, this will mark their first time attending a Broadway show—an opportunity born from a collaboration rooted in visibility, belonging, and cultural pride.
“This partnership goes beyond entertainment,” said Uzzie Arias, Director of the “Vale Todo” program. “It’s a message that these young people—many of whom have experienced rejection, instability, and displacement—are seen, valued, and celebrated.”
Founded in 2002 in memory of gender-nonconforming youth Ali Forney, the Center is the largest organization in the nation dedicated to LGBTQ+ homeless youth. Each day, it serves nearly 300 young people with services ranging from emergency housing to health care, education, and workforce development. The “Vale Todo” program, tailored for Spanish-speaking participants, addresses the cultural, linguistic, and emotional needs of Latino LGBTQ+ youth.
Following the performance, guests will take part in a private post-show conversation with members of the cast—a rare opportunity for personal connection with performers whose stories often reflect their own.
The initiative is part of Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s broader commitment to fostering equity and representation in the arts. The production has previously led similar community efforts and continues to advocate for partnerships that amplify marginalized voices.
“Pride is about joy, resistance, and community,” said Carmen Pavlovic, lead producer for the musical. “We’re honored to support the Ali Forney Center in its mission and welcome these young people into our world—even if just for one night.”
The musical, a lavish adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, opened on Broadway in 2019 and went on to win 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. With its electrifying blend of pop anthems and opulent spectacle, Moulin Rouge! has become both a box-office juggernaut and a symbol of creative inclusivity.
