About the Play

For generations, the Jasper family has stood at the center of Black American politics—pastors, civil rights leaders, and congressmen. But when the youngest son, Nazareth, returns home with an unexpected guest, decades of secrets, tensions, and unresolved legacies come to the surface. Spirited, sharp, and deeply resonant, PURPOSE is a revelatory new family drama exploring faith, power, and identity in America.

Produced by David Stone, Debra Martin Chase, Marc Platt, LaChanze, Rashad Chambers, Aaron Glick, Universal Theatrical Group, and Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
