Academy to Honor Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, Wynn Thomas and Dolly Parton at Governors Awards

Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, Wynn Thomas, and Dolly Parton to Receive Honorary Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, and Wynn Thomas will receive Honorary Oscars, with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award going to Dolly Parton. The awards will be presented at the 16th Governors Awards on Nov. 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.

“These four individuals have each made a unique and lasting impact on the film industry,” said Janet Yang, president of the Academy. “Their work and contributions embody the spirit of these awards.”

Allen, a three-time Emmy winner, will be recognized for a career that spans nearly five decades as a choreographer, actor, producer, and director. Her choreography has shaped the Oscars telecast itself—she has choreographed the ceremony seven times—and her work includes credits on films such as Forget Paris, A Jazzman’s Blues, and the forthcoming The Six Triple Eight. Allen also produced Amistad and A Star for Rose, and starred in projects such as Fame, Ragtime, and Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling.

Cruise, whose films have grossed more than $11 billion worldwide, will be honored for his commitment to the theatrical experience and his advocacy for cinema during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nominated three times for acting Oscars—for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia—he earned a Best Picture nomination as a producer on Top Gun: Maverick. His body of work includes Risky Business, A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, and the Mission: Impossible series.

Parton, a two-time Oscar nominee for Best Original Song, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in recognition of her decades of philanthropic work. The country music legend launched the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 to support education in her home state of Tennessee. In 1995, she founded the Imagination Library, which has since distributed over 285 million books to children worldwide.

Thomas, one of the most accomplished production designers working today, will be honored for a career that has helped define the visual language of American film. Best known for his long collaboration with Spike Lee—beginning with She’s Gotta Have It and continuing through Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and Da 5 Bloods—Thomas’s other credits include A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, and Hidden Figures.

The Honorary Oscar is awarded for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement,” while the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recognizes those “whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.”

The event is sponsored by Rolex, the Academy’s official watch partner since 2017.
