‘Dead Outlaw’ to End Broadway Run on June 29
The Tony-nominated musical Dead Outlaw will play its final Broadway performance at the Longacre Theatre on Sunday, June 29, producers Lia Vollack and Sonia Friedman announced Friday. The show, which opened April 27 following a successful Off-Broadway premiere at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre, will have played 73 regular performances and 14 previews.
With music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna, a book by Tony winner Itamar Moses (The Band’s Visit), and direction by David Cromer, Dead Outlaw tells the stranger-than-fiction story of Elmer McCurdy, a failed outlaw whose body became an unlikely attraction in death. The musical blends dark comedy and Americana with a meditation on fame, failure, and the absurdity of legacy.
Despite critical acclaim and a loyal fan base, the show is closing at the end of a competitive Broadway season.
“Like Elmer McCurdy, Dead Outlaw is a true outlier — strange, singular, and enduring,” the producers said in a joint statement. “It never followed the rules — and that has made it one of the most daring and fulfilling productions we’ve had the privilege to stage.”
The production earned seven Tony nominations and won multiple awards, including the 2024 Drama Desk Award, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.
The Broadway cast includes Tony nominees Andrew Durand as Elmer McCurdy, Jeb Brown as Band Leader/Jarrett, and Julia Knitel as Helen/Maggie, alongside Eddie Cooper, Dashiell Eaves, Ken Marks, Trent Saunders, and Thom Sesma.
Choreography is by Ani Taj, with scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado, costumes by Sarah Laux, lighting by Heather Gilbert, and sound by Kai Harada. Orchestrations are by Yazbek, Della Penna, and Dean Sharenow.
Tickets for the remaining performances are available at www.deadoutlawmusical.com and through Telecharge.
