 Robert Icke’s Acclaimed Oedipus to

Make Broadway Debut at Studio 54

The Olivier Award-winning production of Oedipus, Robert Icke’s bold and contemporary reimagining of Sophocles’ tragedy, will arrive on Broadway this fall, producers announced Tuesday.

The West End hit—led by Olivier Award winner Mark Strong and Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville—will begin performances at Studio 54 on October 30, with an official opening set for November 13. The strictly limited 14-week engagement is presented by Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Patrick Catullo, in association with Roundabout Theatre Company.

Originally staged in Dutch by Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and presented at the Edinburgh International Festival, Icke’s Oedipus has since become a sensation across Europe. This English-language production premiered in London to sold-out audiences and widespread critical acclaim, earning two Olivier Awards—Best Revival of a Play and Best Actress for Manville—as well as three U.K. Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, including Best Director (Icke), Best Actor (Strong), and Best Actress (Manville).

Set on election night, with polls predicting a landslide victory, Icke reframes the ancient tale of prophecy and fate into a modern-day political thriller. The drama unfolds with a chilling sense of inevitability, propelling the narrative through secrets, revelations, and moral reckoning.

Strong, reprising his performance as the title character, was praised by The Independent for delivering a “fearless, sometimes fearsome” turn. Manville, making her Broadway debut as Jocasta, was lauded by iNews as “magnetic and magnificent.” Their onstage chemistry has been described as “dazzling” by The Sunday Times and “transfixing” by The Financial Times.

In London, the production shattered box office records at Wyndham’s Theatre, becoming the highest-grossing limited-run play in the venue’s history. The Guardian called it a “tightly sprung, gasp-inducing, modern-day political tale of truth and lies,” while The Observer named it the No. 1 cultural event of 2024.

Joining Icke’s creative team are scenic designer Hildegard Bechtler, costume designer Wojciech Dziedzic, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, sound designer Tom Gibbons, and video designer Tal Yarden. Casting is by Julia Horan, CDG, and Jim Carnahan, CSA.

Advance tickets will be available through an exclusive TodayTix presale beginning Tuesday, June 24 at 10 a.m. ET, with general on-sale beginning Wednesday, June 25 at 10 a.m. ET. Additional information can be found at OedipusThePlay.com.
