Montego Glover to Return as Rose in George C. Wolfe’s Gypsy on Broadway

Montego Glover to Return as Rose in George C. Wolfe’s Gypsy on Broadway

Montego Glover, a Tony Award nominee celebrated for her powerhouse vocals and commanding stage presence, will reprise her role as Rose in the Broadway revival of Gypsy for Sunday matinee performances this summer. Her limited engagement run begins July 20 at the Majestic Theatre, filling in during select performances for Audra McDonald, who originated the role in this production.

The critically acclaimed revival, directed by six-time Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe, opened earlier this year to strong reviews and features choreography by Camille A. Brown and orchestrations by Andy Einhorn and Daryl Waters. Glover briefly stepped into the role in early July during McDonald’s vacation, earning praise for her emotionally textured and vocally thrilling interpretation of Rose, often considered one of the most demanding roles in the American musical theater canon.

Glover brings a formidable résumé to the role. A Tony nominee for Memphis, her Broadway credits include Into the Woods (2022–23 revival as The Witch), Les Misérables (Fantine), The Color Purple (Celie & Nettie), It Shoulda Been You, and Hamilton (Angelica Schuyler in the Chicago company). Her Off-Broadway performances include The Royale at Lincoln Center Theater—garnering a Drama Desk Award—and All The Natalie Portmans at MCC Theater.

On screen, Glover has appeared in The Blacklist, Inventing Anna, Evil, The Good Wife, and Smash, among others. She recently lent her voice to Netflix’s animated feature Entergalactic and continues her narration work with the Rebel Girls series for Audible. Later this year, she joins the PBS animated series Alma’s Way. In her hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, “The Montego Glover Exhibition” is now in its third year at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center & African American Museum.

The cast of Gypsy also includes Tony winner Danny Burstein as Herbie, Tony nominee Joy Woods as Louise, and Jordan Tyson as June. Kevin Csolak, Lesli Margherita, Lili Thomas, and Mylinda Hull round out the ensemble of burlesque veterans, alongside a large supporting cast and ensemble directed by Wolfe and choreographed by Brown.

The creative team features scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costumes by Toni-Leslie James, lighting by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, and sound by Scott Lehrer. Hair and wig design is by Academy Award winner Mia Neal, with casting by Jordan Thaler and Heidi Griffiths.

Gypsy, based on the memoirs of striptease icon Gypsy Rose Lee, remains a towering story of maternal ambition and the toll of showbiz dreams. With a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the revival continues to resonate with new generations under Wolfe’s direction.

Tickets are available via Telecharge.com or at the Majestic Theatre box office (245 West 44th Street), with prices starting at $59. Sunday matinees begin at 3 p.m.
