44 – The Musical, the sharp-witted satirical musical comedy about the rise and presidency of Barack Obama, is headed to New York. Following a celebrated return engagement in Chicago this summer, the award-winning production will begin an eight-week limited run Off-Broadway at the Daryl Roth Theatre (101 East 15th Street) on Tuesday, October 14, with an official press opening on Thursday, November 6, producers Eli Bauman and Monica Saunders-Weinberg announced.
Written, composed, and directed by Eli Bauman—a former Obama campaign staffer best known for his work on NBC’s Maya & Marty—44 – The Musical blends biting political satire with show-stopping musical numbers. The production follows Obama’s historic ascent to the White House and his time as president, reimagined through the unpredictable lens of a storytelling Joe Biden. Along the way, the musical introduces a cast of eccentric figures from American politics—including a pitch-perfect Michelle Obama—and delivers a humorous, subversive look at modern history.
“It tickled me purple all night long,” wrote Chris Jones of The Chicago Tribune, praising the Chicago production's smart writing and infectious energy.
To commemorate President Obama’s 64th birthday on Monday, August 4, a special allotment of $44 tickets will be released for purchase, including front-row seats for the first two weeks and limited $44 seats available for all performances in select locations. Tickets for the New York run will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on August 4 at 44theobamamusical.com, Telecharge.com, or by calling Telecharge at (212) 239-6210.
Casting for the Off-Broadway production of 44 – The Musical will be announced in the coming weeks.
A fresh and funny spin on presidential history, 44 – The Musical isn’t the Obama story found in textbooks—especially now that books are banned in some states, the production notes wryly. Instead, it’s an irreverent Obama musical that invites audiences to laugh, remember, and sing along.
