Early Buzz Builds for Anurag Kashyap’s TIFF Entry, “Monkey in a Cage”
Early festival chatter is beginning to swirl around Monkey in a Cage, the latest from filmmaker, writer, and producer Anurag Kashyap. The film is set to screen at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, and it’s already drawing attention from those tracking this year’s most daring global entries.
Kashyap has built a career on defying Bollywood convention. From his breakthrough screenplay for Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya (1998), to the cult crime saga Gangs of Wasseypur—often referred to as India’s Godfather—to Netflix India’s Sacred Games, co-created with longtime collaborator Vikramaditya Motwane, Kashyap has consistently pushed boundaries in both form and content.
Off-screen, he’s just as unfiltered. Whether critiquing the gatekeepers of Indian cinema or clashing with streaming giants like Netflix, Kashyap has never been one to hold back. In a recent interview, he spoke candidly—and often profanely—about what’s ailing Indian film today, why he’s angry with Netflix (not for the reasons one might assume), and why he believes the industry’s renaissance may still be on the horizon.
With Monkey in a Cage, he appears ready to stir the conversation once again—on his own terms.
