“Dog Day Afternoon”
to Premiere on Broadway in March 2026
Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, along with producers Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Patrick Catullo, announced today that Dog Day Afternoon, a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis, will begin performances at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, with an official opening night set for Sunday, March 30, 2026. The production will play a strictly limited 16-week engagement through June 28, 2026.
Adapted from the Academy Award–winning film and the true events that inspired it, the production will be directed by two-time Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold (King Charles III). Making their Broadway debuts, Emmy Award winner Jon Bernthal (The Bear, The Walking Dead) will star as Sonny Amato, alongside two-time Emmy Award winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear, Fantastic Four: First Steps) as Sal DeSilva.
Exclusive presale tickets will be available to fans who sign up at DogDayAfternoonBroadway.com beginning Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 10 a.m. ET. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10 a.m. ET.
Set in the heat of a 1972 New York summer, Dog Day Afternoon revisits the story of a Brooklyn bank robbery gone awry—an event that transfixed a nation against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the unfolding Watergate scandal. With each tense moment, the play promises to capture the desperation, volatility, and humanity that defined this extraordinary true story.
Additional casting and the full creative team will be announced in the coming months.
