For over half a century, the Cuban musician’s lyrics captured dreams and disillusionments, love and resistance, giving poetic shape to an era defined by its contradictions. Yet few beyond the Spanish-speaking world know the personal and political complexities behind his legacy—until now.
Para Vivir, The Implacable Times of Pablo Milanés—a Mexico–Spain–U.S.A. co-production directed by Fabien Pisani—arrives at DOC NYC 2025 for its U.S. premiere, following celebrated debuts at Sheffield, Mar del Plata, and the Morelia International Film Festival. The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with Pisani, offering audiences a rare opportunity to delve deeper into the film’s central dialogue between art, memory, and reconciliation.
Through an intimate conversation between a son and his terminally ill father, Para Vivir becomes a portrait not only of an artist but of Cuba itself. Milanés’s life unfolds alongside the island’s social and cultural upheavals, tracing how the troubadour who once sang for the revolution evolved into an unwavering voice for truth and freedom. Weaving rare archival footage, revealing interviews with music legends and family, and the timeless resonance of Milanés’s songs, the film is both elegy and celebration.
