‘Masquerade’ Reveals New Production Photos, Offering an Unusually Close Look at a Reinvented Phantom

The Phans wanted more.

Masquerade
—the immersive reimagining inspired by The Phantom of the Opera—has obliged. The production released a new set of photographs on Tuesday, offering the most detailed glimpse yet into a world that has been deliberately designed to pull audiences past the footlights and into the story’s shadowy architecture.

The images, captured by Andy Henderson, Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman, and Luis Suarez, move from the riotous elegance of the masked ball to backstage corridors where performers catch their breath. Others descend further, slipping through mirrors and into the corners of the Phantom’s domain. Together, they reflect the show’s aim: to bring the tale, and its iconic score, into closer, stranger focus than ever before.

Critics have taken note.

“It is wonderful to be in arm’s length of the boat,” wrote The New York Times, calling the show “breathlessly exciting.”

The New York Post deemed it “a sexy, hot ticket.”

The Daily Beast described it as “powerfully staged… ‘Phantom’ like you’ve never experienced before.”

Slant Magazine praised its “mighty” inventiveness.

Time Out New York urged audiences to “get dressed up, hide your face, and give yourself over to the phantasy.”

A newly released photograph by Henderson features a masked figure standing among candles, a pointed reminder of the production’s visual ambition. Another, by Murphy and Zimmerman for MurphyMade, captures Baby Byrne in an image that leans into the show’s theatrical extremes.

The cast includes Alaska, Lee H. Alexander, Laura Lee Anderson, Baby Byrne, Matthew Curiano, Nicholas Edwards, Gabriella Enriquez, Nicole J. Fergeson, Haile Ferrier, Nkrumah Gatling, Francisco Javier González, Cooper Grodin, Maxfield Haynes, Bryan Hernandez-Luch, Satomi Hofmann, Kody Jauron, Maree Johnson, Tia Karaplis, Nathan Keen, Joseph Kerr, Jeff Kready, Michael Kuhn, Jacob Lacopo, Rawb Lane, Eryn LeCroy, Telly Leung, Claire Leyden, Francesca Mehrotra, Georgia Mendes, Sami Merdinian, Anna Monoxide, Betsy Morgan, Dario Natarelli, Riley Noland, Charles Osborne, Hugh Panaro, Alex Ross, Chris Ryan, Kyle Scatliffe, Paul Adam Schaefer, Clay Singer, Phumzile Sojola, Cooper Stanton, Jeremy Stolle, Jack Sullivan, Olivia Tarchick, Kaley Ann Voorhees, Nik Walker, Andrew Wojtal, Nikita Yermak, Kevin Zambrano, and Anna Zavelson.

Its creative team draws from theater, dance, fashion, and design, including Rosario Arcuri, Shai Baitel, Hunter Bird, Yeman Brown, Alan Busch Jr., Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Kathy Fabian, James Fluhr, Jessie Flynn, Nicola Formichetti, Skylar Fox, Chris Habana, J. J. Janas, Brett Jarvis, Marc Kimelman, Kate Lumpkin, Lee McCutcheon, Scott Pask, Diane Paulus, Alicia Rodis, Gypsy Snider, Emilio Sosa, Tori Sparks, Ben Stanton, Mike Tyus, David Andrew Wilson, and William Waldrop.

The production’s technical and operations team spans more than 100 members, underscoring the scale of the enterprise behind the scenes—from stage management and choreography support to costume construction, marketing, and audience services.

Masquerade seeks to blur the line between spectator and spectacle. Audiences are guided from rooftops to underground chambers beneath the Opera Populaire, where the “Music of the Night” unfolds at close range. When the chandelier—embedded with more than 30,000 crystals provided by Preciosa, the production’s Official Crystal Partner—ascends once again over Midtown, it is as much a statement of intent as a visual flourish. M.A.C. Cosmetics serves as Official Makeup Partner; Taittinger provides the Champagne.

Same-day access is available through the Black Tie Standby Line, which offers $170 tickets beginning an hour before curtain, pending availability. Advance tickets are on sale at www.masqueradenyc.com

Based on the original musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, Masquerade is presented by arrangement with Lloyd Webber Entertainment.

The show is currently running at 218 West 57th Street, with performances scheduled through February 1, 2026.
