At the 98th Academy Awards in 2026, the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature was won by Mr. Nobody Against Putin, a powerful and unusual documentary directed by David Borenstein and Pavel Talankin. The film centers on Talankin, a primary‑school teacher and school videographer from Karabash, a small mining town in Russia’s Ural region, who began secretly filming the increasing presence of state propaganda and militaristic indoctrination in his classroom and community following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. By turning the very footage he was required to shoot for government authorities into a firsthand chronicle of how political messaging was woven into daily school life, the documentary becomes both an intimate portrait of life under an authoritarian system and a courageous act of resistance.
