Public Theater expands summer programming with ‘Shakespeare for the City’ rollout

The Public Theater is expanding its summer footprint across New York City, with an ambitious 2026 rollout of “Shakespeare for the City,” a multi-month initiative running May 22 through September 8 that aims to reach more than 130,000 residents with free performances and public programming.

At the center of the season is its long-awaited return to the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, along with a citywide effort to bring Shakespeare into parks, plazas, and community spaces in all five boroughs.

A summer built around access

The season opens May 22 with “Romeo & Juliet,” directed by Saheem Ali — the first Central Park staging of the play in nearly two decades. A second production, “The Winter’s Tale,” begins July 25, directed by Daniel Sullivan. A third production, “As You Like It,” launches June 4 as part of the Mobile Unit, which will travel to parks and correctional facilities throughout the city.

The initiative formally kicks off with a public event on May 30 (12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.) at the Delacorte, featuring family programming and community activations.

Tickets available in the five boroughs

Free ticket access remains central to the program. Beginning May 23, vouchers for same-day performances will be distributed daily at locations across the city, including:

  • May 23 – Snug Harbor Cultural Center (Staten Island)
  • May 24 – New York Hall of Science (Queens)
  • May 27 – Clason’s Point Library (Bronx)
  • May 29 – Macomb’s Bridge Library (Manhattan)
  • June 5 – Long Island City Library (Queens)
  • June 21 – Queens Museum (Queens)
  • July 30 – Citizens, Tribeca (Manhattan)
  • August 9 – Brownsville Recreation Center (Brooklyn)
  • August 22 – Snug Harbor Cultural Center (Staten Island)

Additional distributions will take place throughout the summer, including 12 Citizens bank branches citywide.

Three in-person lottery events are also scheduled at Nordstrom’s flagship store on June 23, July 28, and August 18.

Public programming at the Delacorte

The theater will host a series of open-access events throughout the summer:

  • June 5 & 19; August 7, 14, & 21 – “Summer Fridays,” featuring open houses (12:00 noon–4:00 p.m.) and evening programming (6:00–8:00 p.m.)

A Public Works production is scheduled to return in September 2026, with details to be announced.

Fulfilling a broader civic vision

The scale of the program reflects a continued push to position theater as a civic resource, not just a cultural one, expanding beyond Central Park and into neighborhoods where access has historically been limited. By stretching its calendar from late May through early September and embedding distribution points from Staten Island to the Bronx, the Public is betting that Shakespeare, presented freely and widely, still holds a place in the city’s shared summer rhythm.
