The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected Sofía Carson to host its 2026 Scientific and Technical Awards, placing one of Hollywood’s most visible multi-hyphenates at the center of a night that honors the architecture of filmmaking itself.

The ceremony will take place on April 28 at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. During the evening, Carson will present 15 technical achievements — innovations that were announced earlier this year and have already proven their impact in the industry.

While the Oscars celebrate performance and storytelling, the Scientific and Technical Awards operate on a different level: They recognize the breakthroughs most audiences never see but experience in every frame — camera systems that capture impossible shots, sound technologies that deepen immersion, and digital tools that expand the boundaries of imagination. These are the contributions that quietly redefine what cinema can do.

Carson’s presence brings a bridge between those worlds.

Her career has been defined by reach and range. She has starred in a string of global hits, including “Purple Hearts,” “Carry-On,” “The Life List,” and “My Oxford Year,” with multiple titles landing among Netflix’s most-watched films of all time.

On the music side, she is a multi-platinum artist with more than 4 billion streams worldwide.

She also stepped onto one of Hollywood’s most recognized stages to perform “Applause,” the Academy Award-nominated song written by Diane Warren for the film “Tell It like a Woman,” at the 95th Academy Awards.

This night, though, asks for something different.

The Scientific and Technical Awards are about legacy. Each honor is given only after years of demonstrated value — tools and techniques that have not only been introduced but adopted, tested, and proven essential to the filmmaking process. In many ways, these awards function as a record of the industry’s evolution, marking the moments when innovation shifted from experiment to standard.

By hosting, Carson steps into the role of translator, helping bring visibility to the engineers, designers, and visionaries — work that shapes the films audiences love but that they rarely think about.

Beyond entertainment, Carson continues to use her platform with intention, extending her influence far beyond the screen: As a UNICEF ambassador, she advocates for education and the protection of women and girls worldwide.

For the Academy, the evening underscores a larger mission: to celebrate every layer of filmmaking, from performance to process. The Scientific and Technical Awards may not enjoy the same spotlight as the Oscars, but in the industry, they hold a different kind of weight — one rooted in innovation, longevity, and the future of cinema itself.
