'White Lotus' is heading to the South of France
HBO has begun production on Season 4 of its Emmy-winning anthology “White Lotus,” with creator Mike White returning as writer, director, and executive producer. The new installment will be set against the backdrop of the Cannes Film Festival, marking the franchise’s first explicit tie-in with a real-world global event.
Filming is now underway on the French Riviera, with primary locations including Cannes, St. Tropez, and Monaco. Production will also extend to Paris, although sources indicate the narrative will remain anchored along the Côte d’Azur — a shift that leans further into the series’ fascination with wealth, spectacle, and cultural performance on an international stage.
A festival-driven storyline
Season 4 will once again follow a rotating ensemble of wealthy guests and hotel staff over the course of a week. This time, the action unfolds during the Cannes Film Festival, offering a natural convergence of celebrity culture, industry power brokers, and global elites — fertile ground for White’s signature social satire.
The setting suggests a sharper focus on entertainment-world dynamics, from film financing and red-carpet politics to the blurred lines between art and commerce. Cannes, long synonymous with prestige and excess, provides a fitting backdrop for the series’ ongoing exploration of privilege and moral ambiguity.
Expansive international cast
The new season features one of the show’s most international ensembles to date, led by Helena Bonham Carter, Vincent Cassel, and Steve Coogan. They are joined by Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, and Nadia Tereszkiewicz.
Additional cast members include Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnetzer, and Laura Smet.
As with previous seasons, character details are being kept tightly under wraps, although insiders describe a mix of film industry figures, European aristocracy, and American tourists navigating overlapping personal and professional tensions.
Real hotels, fictional brand
This season will once again integrate real luxury properties into the fictional White Lotus brand. The Airelles Château de la Messardière in St. Tropez will serve as the “White Lotus du Cap,” while the Hôtel Martinez in Cannes — a longtime festival hotspot — will appear as the “White Lotus Cannes.”
The use of recognizable locations aligns with the series’ established formula, blending aspirational travel imagery with darker thematic undercurrents.
Continuing a global expansion
Following previous seasons set in Hawaii, Sicily, and Thailand, the move to France underscores HBO’s strategy of positioning “The White Lotus” as a global franchise. Each installment has broadened the show’s cultural scope while maintaining its core structure: a weeklong stay that spirals into interpersonal conflict, existential tension, and often death.
White executive produces along with David Bernad and Mark Kamine.
A premiere date has not yet been announced, but production timing suggests a 2026 debut as likely.
