‘Heathers’ stays red-hot off-Broadway as Ava DeMary and Jeanette Bayardelle join record-breaking run
Ava DeMary and the Tony Award-nominee Jeanette Bayardelle will join the cast of “Heathers the Musical” on June 24 at New World Stages, injecting fresh firepower into a production that has become one of off-Broadway’s most commercially potent—and culturally sticky—hits.
DeMary, known for her Broadway turns in “Billy Elliot,” “Evita,” and “Matilda,” steps into the role of Heather McNamara, the deceptively bubbly member of Westerberg High’s ruling trio. Bayardelle, a commanding stage presence and Tony nominee for “Girl From the North Country,” takes on the dual roles of Ms. Fleming and Veronica’s mother, bringing vocal heft and dramatic range to the production’s adult authority figures.
They succeed Elizabeth Teeter and Lisa Ann Walter, who will play their final performances on June 21 and June 22, respectively, marking a notable cast transition in a show that has thrived on reinvention.
Directed by Andy Fickman, “Heathers” began performances in June 2025 and quickly shattered expectations, posting the largest advance in New World Stages’ 21-year history and breaking the theater’s house record multiple times. With its current extension through September 6, 2026, the production shows no signs of cooling.
Based on the cult 1989 film, the musical drops audiences into the brutal social ecosystem of Westerberg High, where Veronica Sawyer’s rise into the orbit of the Heathers — three beautiful and merciless arbiters of status — spirals into chaos with the arrival of J.D., a charismatic outsider who turns teenage alienation into something far more explosive.
With a propulsive score and razor-edged book by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, “Heathers” has evolved from cult favorite to global phenomenon, fueled in part by its fiercely loyal fan base and a tone that balances satire, danger, and dark comedy with unnerving precision.
