Adrienne Warren will join the cast of Broadway’s first revival of “Proof” beginning June 30 at the Booth Theatre, replacing Kara Young in the limited engagement starring Ayo Edebiri, Don Cheadle, and Jin Ha.
The casting adds another major Broadway name to a production that already featured one of the season’s strongest straight-play casts. Directed by Thomas Kail, the revival runs through July 19.
While the production drew attention for its cast, “Proof” was largely absent from this year’s Tony Awards conversation — something that has surprised many Broadway observers, given the visibility surrounding the revival.
The production stars Emmy- and Golden Globe-winner Ayo Edebiri as Catherine opposite Academy Award-nominee Don Cheadle as Robert. Warren joins after recent appearances in “The Last Five Years” and City Center Encores!’ “The Wild Party.”
The revival also marks a notable moment for the Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Since premiering in 2000, “Proof” has traditionally been associated with more conventional Broadway casting. This production places a predominantly nonwhite principal cast at the center of the story for the first time on Broadway.
The Tony shutout has become part of the discussion about the production, particularly as Broadway continues to debate how to attract younger audiences and create renewed interest in straight plays. With Edebiri’s popularity, Cheadle’s substantial reputation in drama, and Warren’s Broadway following, “Proof” arrived with unusual crossover attention for a limited-run drama.
