John Lithgow Wins Tony for Best Actor in a Play for 'Giant'

John Lithgow won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Giant at the 79th Annual Tony Awards, which are being presented live from Radio City Music Hall.

Lithgow, a veteran actor known for television roles in "3rd Rock from the Universe" and "The Wire," delivered a performance in Giant that critics described as emotionally powerful and physically demanding. The play centers on a 90-year-old man confronting memory and loss.

"This is my first Best Play nomination in nearly 30 years," Lithgow said after the win. "I've waited 40 years to say this on national TV. I'm a Tony winner. And I'm still here."

The star has won two Emmy Awards, a Grammy for children's music, and received multiple Tony nominations across acting, directing, and producing over his five-decade career. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama.

Giant director Sarah Benson praised Lithgow's work: "John didn't just play an old man. He became the soul of the story."

The win comes as part of a night where Schmigadoon! and Cats: The Jellicle Ball led early wins in creative categories, and The Lost Boys took Best Lighting Design of a Musical.
