‘An Eye for an Eye’ Documentary Examines an Iranian Mother’s Fight to Escape Execution
The Tribeca-winning courtroom documentary opens in select theaters and begins streaming on Jolt.film on Aug. 14.
The award-winning documentary An Eye for an Eye will open in select theaters and become available on Jolt.film beginning Aug. 14.
Directed by Tanaz Eshaghian and Farzad Jafari, the 84-minute real-life courtroom thriller follows Tahereh, an Iranian woman facing execution years after killing her abusive husband in self-defense.
Under Iran’s system of Diya, or blood money, Tahereh can avoid execution only if she pays the financial compensation demanded by her late husband’s family. As the deadline approaches and public sympathy begins to fade, her son Mohsen launches a desperate effort to raise the money needed to save his mother’s life.
With rare access to legal proceedings, private negotiations and intimate family conversations, Eshaghian and Jafari document the emotional and financial pressure placed on Tahereh and her children. The film also examines how domestic-abuse survivors can become further endangered by a justice system shaped by patriarchal authority and religious law.
Part courtroom drama and part family portrait, An Eye for an Eye places viewers inside a life-or-death struggle involving self-defense, capital punishment, domestic violence, and the price a family must pay to secure mercy.
The documentary received a Special Jury Mention for Documentary Feature and the Best Editing award at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. It was also selected for the 2025 Woodstock Film Festival, the 2026 CPH festival and the 2026 Antenna Documentary Film Festival.
