Irene Dionisio’s ‘IDDA,’ Set on Mount Etna, to Premiere at TIFF 2026
The Italian drama, starring Tecla Insolia and Romana Maggiora Vergano, will make its world premiere in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Platform competition.
A first-look image has been released for “IDDA,” the second narrative feature from the Italian filmmaker Irene Dionisio, ahead of its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.
Selected for the TIFF Platform competition, the 89-minute Italian-language drama stars Tecla Insolia and Romana Maggiora Vergano as Adele and Sofia, childhood friends who reunite in their thirties to fulfill a long-held dream of climbing Sicily’s Mount Etna.
Their journey through the volcano’s stark landscape turns volatile when a confrontation exposes old wounds and buried secrets. The women separate as Etna begins to tremble, leaving Adele to continue toward the summit alone, haunted by the possibility that she should have turned back.
Dionisio, whose first narrative feature, “Pawn Street,” premiered at Venice Critics’ Week, co-wrote “IDDA” with Marco Borromei. Her earlier work spans documentary filmmaking, visual art and festival leadership, including a tenure as artistic director of Turin’s LGBTQI film festival, Lovers.
Insolia, a 2026 Berlinale European Shooting Star, won Italy’s David di Donatello Award for her performance in Valeria Golino’s “The Art of Joy.” Vergano gained international attention in Paola Cortellesi’s box-office success “There’s Still Tomorrow” and recently appeared in “The Time It Takes” and “Those About to Die.”
“IDDA” is produced by Kino Produzioni with Rai Cinema and several Italian production partners. Rai Cinema International Distribution is handling international sales and will present the film to buyers at TIFF’s new content market. Distribution deals have already been secured in Bulgaria and Brazil.
The film will compete for the TIFF Platform Award, which recognizes distinctive directorial vision. Beginning in 2026, a non-English-language winner will qualify for consideration in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.
“IDDA” was filmed as an environmentally sustainable production and received Green Film certification.
