Marvel Studios is officially moving Wakanda into a new era. During its San Diego Comic-Con 2026 presentation, Ryan Coogler confirmed that David Jonsson will star in "Black Panther 3" as the adult version of King T’Challa’s son, Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint.

The announcement marks a major shift for the Black Panther franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the story continues the legacy of Chadwick Boseman without recasting the original T’Challa. Instead, Marvel is turning to the next generation of Wakandan royalty, building the film around legacy, inheritance, and the future of the crown.

Jonsson, known for "Alien: Romulus" and "The Long Walk", will portray a grown-up Prince T’Challa II, the child first introduced in the post-credits scene of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever". Raised in secret by Nakia in Haiti, the character is now positioned to step into a far larger role as he returns to Wakanda and confronts the responsibilities of his birthright.

Coogler said "Black Panther 3" will be a coming-of-age story centered on T’Challa II’s evolution into a leader, making the film both a character-driven drama and a major new chapter in Marvel’s Black Panther saga. The project continues the franchise’s focus on identity, family, duty, and nationhood, while expanding the emotional reach of the Wakanda story.

Several key figures from the first two films are returning. Letitia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri, and Winston Duke is also set to return as M’Baku. Duke has publicly voiced support for Jonsson’s casting, adding extra momentum to the film’s next-generation storyline.

Coogler will return as writer and director, and the film is also taking a bold visual approach: "Black Panther 3" will be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film, giving the movie a distinct cinematic look and marking a notable first for the MCU. That creative choice reinforces the scale and ambition behind one of Marvel’s most important upcoming releases.

"Black Panther 3" is scheduled to hit theaters on December 15, 2028, and with David Jonsson stepping into the title role, Marvel Studios is clearly betting on a powerful blend of legacy, spectacle, and emotional storytelling.
