'Olmo' Turns a Teenage Escape Plan Into a Tender Story of Family, Caregiving and Home
Fernando Eimbcke’s coming-of-age drama, set in 1979 New Mexico, follows a 14-year-old boy caught between the responsibilities waiting at home and the party he is desperate to attend.
For 14-year-old Olmo, home has become a place defined by responsibility.
His family is struggling financially in 1979 New Mexico, while an illness keeps his father, Nestor, confined to bed. Olmo’s mother, Cecilia, and his sister, Ana, share the daily work of caring for him, and Olmo is expected to do his part. But he is also a restless teenager who would rather spend time with his best friend, Miguel, and find a way to impress Nina, the beautiful girl next door.
When Nina invites him to a party on the same day he has been left alone with his father, Olmo sees the invitation as his chance to escape—at least for one night. What follows is a spiraling stretch of mischief, questionable decisions, and adolescent chaos as he tries to free himself from the obligations waiting at home.
Yet the farther Olmo runs from his family, the more clearly the film brings him back to it. His home may be the source of his frustration and deepest pain, but it is also where he begins to recognize love, belonging and the quiet forms of care holding his family together.
Written by Vanesa Garnica and Fernando Eimbcke and directed by Eimbcke, “Olmo” stars Aivan Uttapa in the title role, with Gustavo Sánchez Parra as Nestor, Andrea Suárez Paz as Cecilia, Rosa Armendariz as Ana, Diego Olmedo as Miguel and Melanie Frometa as Nina. The film is an 84-minute U.S.-Mexico production set against the rhythms and pressures of late-1970s New Mexico.
Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Eréndira Núñez Larios and Michel Franco serve as producers. Brad Pitt, Caddy Vanasirikul and Yuri Chung are executive producers.
At its center, “Olmo” is a coming-of-age story about family caregiving, teenage rebellion and the painful realization that growing up may mean seeing the people closest to you with greater compassion.
