Springboard to Design Opens Applications for Tuition-Free Theater Design Programs
Applications are open through December 18, 2026, for Springboard to Design’s 2027 SB2D Summer Program and virtual SB2D Fellowship Program.

For many people, Broadway begins and ends at the marquee: the ticket, the seat, the performance, the applause. The curtain comes down, the crowd spills onto the sidewalk, and everyone talks about the stars. But before any actor steps into the light, someone has imagined the room, the weather, the fabric, the sound, the prop, the wig, the world.
Springboard to Design, also known as SB2D, is a tuition-free theater design program presented by Design Action and led by Tony Award-winning designers Clint Ramos and David Zinn. The program serves high school students and emerging designers ages 18–25, with a focus on students from underrepresented communities who want access to professional theater design training.
The application is straightforward. Students are asked to submit a few short written responses, a brief video component, artwork samples, and contact information for one reference. No one needs to arrive with a polished Broadway résumé. The point is to give young artists a way into the room.
Applications are now open for Springboard to Design’s 2027 tuition-free theater design programs.
Led by Tony Award-winning designers Clint Ramos and David Zinn, SB2D gives high school students and emerging designers ages 18–25 access to Broadway-level training in scenic design, costumes, props, sound, lighting, hair, wigs, and more.
