Sophia Anne Caruso to Lead Duncan Sheik’s ‘Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen’ Off-Broadway

The new musical, based on Moyoco Anno’s award-winning manga, begins performances Sept. 25 at The Night Egg in Chelsea.

Sophia Anne Caruso, who originated Lydia Deetz in Broadway’s Beetlejuice, will star in Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, a new Off-Broadway musical featuring music and lyrics by two-time Tony and Grammy winner Duncan Sheik, a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, and direction and choreography by Tony, Olivier and Emmy winner Rob Ashford.

Based on the acclaimed manga by Japanese artist Moyoco Anno, the production begins performances Sept. 25, opens Oct. 15, and is scheduled to run through Jan. 3, 2027 at the new venue The Night Egg at the Culture Club, 530 W. 27th Street. The space previously housed the famed nightclub Twilo and, more recently, Sleep No More.

Set in 20th-century Paris, the musical follows Colette, a young woman working at an elusive maison close called the Night Egg. As she begins recording the fantasies, confessions, and private sorrows of its clientele, she discovers her own power as a writer while struggling with a destructive attachment to her childhood love, Léon.

The production is being billed as the first Japanese manga adapted into an American musical in the English language. Anno’s Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen was serialized from 2013 to 2018, later published in two volumes, and received an Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2020.

Caruso’s stage credits include Lazarus, Blackbird, The Nether and Grey House. She also starred in Netflix’s The School for Good and Evil and will release her debut album, ON ECSTATIC, in September 2026.

The creative team includes Or Matias as music supervisor, Scott Pask on scenic design, Catherine Zuber on costumes, Brian Tovar on lighting, Cody Spencer on sound, and Tom Watson on hair and wig design. Casting is by The Telsey Office / Patrick Goodwin, CSA.
