'West Side Familia' Unearths a Forgotten History of Puerto Rican and Black Activism on New York’s Upper West Side

 

A forgotten chapter of New York history comes home.

Journalist and first-time filmmaker Taylor Hosking’s “West Side Familia” follows Chino Familia and La West Side Familia, uncovering the Black and Puerto Rican activism, community organizing, family memory, and cultural resistance that helped shape Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Following its world premiere as BlackStar Film Festival’s Opening Night Film, “West Side Familia” screens at the New York Latino Film Festival on Wednesday, September 16, at 7:15 p.m. at Regal Union Square.
