Emanuel Ax Documentary ‘All the Music in the World’ Comes to DOC NYC

Joseph Levy’s portrait of the pianist considers friendship, artistic endurance, and the difficult question of when to leave the stage.

A lifetime of applause does not necessarily quiet the nerves before a performance. For Emanuel Ax, whose career has taken him to concert halls around the world for more than five decades, stage fright remains part of the work. So does a question that no ovation can answer: When is it time to stop?

That tension gives All the Music in the World, arriving at DOC NYC in November, a subject beyond the familiar accounting of a great musician’s achievements. Directed by Joseph Levy, the 83-minute documentary follows Ax as he considers his future onstage, placing the accomplishments beside the uncertainty rather than treating one as an antidote to the other.

A Musical Life, Still Unfolding

Filmed over three years, from 2023 through 2026, the documentary draws on performances, rehearsals and conversations with Ax’s friends and collaborators. Among them are Yo-Yo Ma, John Williams, Itzhak Perlman, Leonidas Kavakos and Alisa Weilerstein. These are distinguished names, but the film’s premise points toward something more personal than a procession of tributes: the relationships that sustain a working artist.

DOC NYC’s description singles out Ax’s New York childhood and his close friendship with Ma as essential parts of that story. Its account of the film emphasizes the emotional weight of life transitions—a useful distinction in a portrait of someone whose public identity is so closely bound to performing. Retirement, in this context, is not simply a date on a calendar. It raises the question of what remains when a defining routine changes.

The documentary also follows work that is emphatically unfinished business. One strand traces Ax’s encounter with a new John Williams piano concerto, from his first look at the score through its premiere at Tanglewood on July 26, 2025. That chronology matters: the performance is not an upcoming engagement, but part of the film’s record of an artist continuing to take on new material while weighing what comes next.

“All the music in the world,” Ax says in the festival’s description, “exists to express things that can’t be put into words.” For a documentary about a musician contemplating change, it is an apt invitation: to listen not only for accomplishment, but for what the playing makes possible.
